Certification |
The profession of being a Pharmacy tech
has grown to be very indispensable in the health
care field wherein there’s already a nationwide
shortage of competent pharmacists that can help
in the ever growing customer demand in assisting
them with their medication prescription needs.
This constant need for pharmacy techs to help
out in assisting customers just shows how
important their role is in today’s pharmacy
industry.
This ever growing opportunity for pharmacy techs
to have a significant role in the health care
industry also led to the increase in the level
of responsibility that employers need to make
sure that they’re employing a pharmacy tech that
is fully capable to perform the various
responsibilities concerning this job.
In order
to ensure this, health care industry employers
as well as state legislatures have thought of
having a Pharmacy tech Certification program in
order to address this growing issue in the
health care industry. In fact, in some states it
is now
required that all individuals who working as
pharmacy techs be nationally certified.
For those who are still not sure of what a
pharmacy tech is, he/she is an individual that
goes under the supervision of a registered
pharmacist in helping out and assisting in the
various activities in the pharmacy department
that does not require the expertise of the a
registered pharmacist.
The primary role of
pharmacy techs is to just assist as well as
support licensed pharmacists when it comes to
providing health care to the patients. Other
names that were once used to call pharmacy techs
are: pharmacy clinicians, pharmacy helpers, and
pharmacy support personnel they actually go by
all sorts of names it just depends on where they
are which department they have been assigned.
In all parts of the country, pharmacy techs are
always expected to have a broad knowledge of the
various practices done in pharmacies and they
must also be well skilled in the various
techniques involving ordering, stocking,
packaging and preparing various medications even
though they need not have a degree in pharmacy
unlike licensed pharmacists.
Even though they
almost have the same responsibilities as that of
a licensed pharmacist, all of the work done by a
pharmacy tech should first be checked by a
licensed pharmacist before it is allowed to be
dispensed to the patient.
For those who want to undergo the national
pharmacy tech certification exam, the candidates
must posses at least a high school diploma or
equivalent – students should attain these
requirements before they attempt
enrolling in the certification program. Being highly
proficient in data entry should be a goal as students have
to be able to type at least 35 words per minute.
Basic knowledge and
understanding of word processing programs such
as Microsoft Word and excel will be expected.
Having a good command of the
English language (both in grammar and
punctuation) is another requirement while it is
not important whether the student already has
some relevant working experience in the health
care industry or in medical office work..
The target audience for the Pharmacy tech
program is individuals who are interested in
being able to learn various job skills for
pharmacy tech employment opportunities or
individuals that are interested in making a
career shift being a pharmacy tech.
A common question about the pharmacy tech exam
is how certain individuals may be able to see
the requirements of each state for pharmacy tech
professionals:
All this information
can be easily accessed by contacting the
Pharmacy tech Certification Board (PTCB). You
may also ask
the state board by calling them through their
hotlines and ask for the current regulations for
technicians.
Another commonly asked question is: “What if my
State requires more than what is offered in this
program?”
Most states still offer employment to those who
want to be a pharmacy tech prior to having been
certified. This usually comes with the
stipulation that the individual will be able to
rightfully acquire a certification within an
adequate amount of time – usually within just a
year. During this period, the applicant will be
considered as unlicensed personnel, a clerk or
an aide.
Going through a on-the-job training or an
internship is actually a great way to better
one’s chances of being able to acquire the
amount of working hours required for those who
would want to take the certification exam. This
will be most helpful for those who are going to
seek work in a hospital pharmacy.
Students who
undergo on relevant internships will be able to
greatly benefit from it by having secured some
of requirements for employment. A lot of states
actually require a significant number of
relevant working hours before being considered
eligible by the registration/certification board
along with educational clinical requirements. |
